About Us
African Women’s Alliance, Inc. (AWA) was formed in 1997 by women from various non-governmental organizations at the United Nations in New York, NY. AWA was incorporated in 2001, and has 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. Membership is non-religious, non-political, broad-based and not limited to women. AWA’s members come from the Continent of Africa, and African Diaspora worldwide, and our programs reflect our interest in the Continent of Africa, the Caribbean, North and South America. We participate in international, and other conferences to represent African viewpoints, and gather information to ascertain facts. We have three standard programs a year that include the sampling of various African cultures, cuisines, music, dance and the graphics arts.
The three programs are :
- Providing participation in, and information for, the themes of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women,
- Our Summer Salon, at which speakers of note and doctoral candidates discuss topics of particular relevance to global Africans, and
- The Focus Series which is a program that selects one country from Africa or its Diaspora to “focus” on, and learn about. Typically, embassies, communities, musicians, artists etc., are invited to share facts about themselves directly. All aspects of the country are available, including visuals, music, food and art. Ethiopia, Antigua and Barbuda, Senegal, Haiti, and Suriname have all been the subject of the AWA “Focus” series.
